Today I've been feeling especially optimistic and creative. One reason: I slept really well last night. I'm grateful for that!

Another reason: on my way to Los Angeles I passed through the San Francisco Airport's SFO Museum and looked up to see this:

A dark wall features the words, "SFO MUSEUM" above a visual creation by Nettrice Gaskins featuring a Black person wearing a natural hairstyle and attire with colorful highlights evoking both traditional African design elements and futuristic elements. Phenomenal.

The rest of the exhibit included mentions and works of
creators both familiar and new to me, including...

Octavia E. Butler; Nnedi Okorafor; N. K. Jemison;
Tananarive Due; Nettrice Gaskins; Nalo Hopkinson;
Roxane Gay; Afua Richardson; Janelle Monáe; Alice Coltrane;
Afatasi the Artist; Alisha B. Wormsley, and so many others.

As a Black woman, author, Afrofuturist, and a human breathing through the challenges and conflicts of these times, I see it as not just collectively important but also personally really nice to see such a thoughtful collection of works by these outstanding writers, singers, designers, and beyond.

However...

I can't stay as long as I'm tempted to stay, and it's because I'm on my way to participate in a talk, "Sanctuaries of Liberation: Where the Edge Gathers" at the AVA Summit in Los Angeles.

So, while I'll save some of my enthusiasm for a future SFO Museum visit, I'm stepping into the day with appreciation: what I do is Afrofuturism. What so many people are creatively doing, through self work and community work... it's all essential for building futures more colorful and nourishing than the cycles we see repeating on the news in 4K.
